Western Cape livestock farmers will showcase the latest trends in the industry at the annual Livestock Performance Show in Eden this week.
The event will take place at the George Sports Grounds on Thursday (27 August 2015).
It is a partnership between the Western Cape Department of Agriculture, the George Agricultural Show Committee, the Western Cape Red Meat Producers Organisations and several livestock breeders and associations.
Alan Winde, Minister of Economic Opportunities, said the Provincial Department of Agriculture offered a range of support services to livestock farmers to boost productivity.
“Our initiatives include programmes supporting animal production and health as well as agricultural economics and record-keeping. The annual Livestock Show is the culmination of this support. The department will also use the opportunity to provide feedback and highlight successes on local farmers achievements over the past year,” said Minister Winde.
The programme will include:
- Breeders societies will demonstrate breed examples of several indigenous or composite cattle and small stock breeds
- Farmers illustrate project progress by exhibiting improved cattle from their own herds (cross breeding)
- Competitions based on animal performance, which includes cow productivity and veld ram performance
- Calf rearing workshop
